Overview

Ziconotide is a conotoxin-derived peptide studied for pain through N-type calcium-channel modulation. Evidence for a defined clinical preparation and route must be separated from broad conotoxin research and animal experiments.

United States — FDA: approved — PRIALT (ziconotide intrathecal infusion) is indicated for the management of severe chronic pain in patients for whom intrathecal (IT) therapy is warranted, and who are intolerant of or refractory to other treatment, such as systemic analgesics, adjunctive therapies, or IT morphine. Labeled pediatric use: safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established.
